Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?
No. In controlled trials, eating or skipping breakfast has almost no effect on body weight or resting metabolism — the reputation came from observational data that was never able to prove cause.
The slogan is a lot older than the evidence. What actually exists is decades of observational research showing that breakfast skippers tend to be heavier. That’s true. It’s also true that skippers tend to smoke more, sleep worse, drink more, and exercise less. Association, not cause.
When researchers ran the real experiment, the effect largely evaporated. The Bath Breakfast Project randomized lean adults to either 700+ kcal before 11am or nothing until noon for six weeks, and measured everything: resting metabolic rate, energy intake, movement, glucose. Resting metabolism didn’t move at all. Breakfast eaters took in more calories but also moved considerably more in the morning, so body composition landed roughly even. The same team repeated the trial in adults with obesity and got the same answer — no weight advantage in either direction.
A BMJ meta-analysis of randomized trials came at it from the other side and agreed: assigning people to eat breakfast raised their total daily calories and left them about 0.44 kg heavier than skippers after roughly seven weeks. That isn’t an argument for skipping. It’s an argument that the meal itself has no special powers. Worth separating from the Intermittent Fasting and Meal Frequency questions, which are about the shape of your whole day; this one asks whether one particular meal outranks the others. It doesn’t.
Where the belief came from
A 2013 analysis in AJCN traced the claim and found the scientific record itself bent out of shape: studies incapable of testing causation cited as though they had, causal language slipped into abstracts describing correlational data, and citations that misrepresented what they pointed at. The authors concluded the belief had outrun its evidence. The phrase itself was a cereal marketing line long before it was a research finding.
If you train in the morning
Here breakfast earns something. Eating beforehand helps endurance efforts over 60 minutes, though not shorter ones, and resistance training is basically unaffected either way. More useful: skipping breakfast can blunt performance later that same day, even after a normal lunch.
So eat before long or hard morning sessions. Otherwise, have breakfast if you’re hungry and it keeps the rest of your day sane. It’s a meal, not a metabolic lever.
