Does collagen help your joints and tendons?

The short answer

Partly. Collagen or gelatin plus vitamin C, taken about an hour before you load a tendon, does raise collagen-synthesis markers and can take the edge off activity-related joint pain — but it hasn't been shown to make tendons meaningfully stronger or stiffer, and it only does anything paired with training.

Collagen is the main structural protein in tendons, ligaments, and cartilage, so the logic feels airtight: eat collagen, rebuild the tissue. The reality is more interesting than that, and the interesting part is about timing.

When you eat gelatin or collagen peptides, they break into amino acids — heavy on glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline — your body can use to build new collagen. Vitamin C matters because it’s a required cofactor for the enzymes that lock collagen into its triple-helix shape. Keith Baar’s lab showed that 15 g of vitamin-C-enriched gelatin, taken about an hour before a short bout of loading, roughly doubled a blood marker of collagen synthesis — and serum from those subjects built stronger engineered ligaments in a dish. Genuinely cool. It’s also eight men and a blood marker, not tendons anyone measured.

Scale up to real training studies and the signal survives but shrinks. A 2024 meta-analysis of 19 trials found collagen plus resistance training reliably increased tendon cross-sectional area — the tendon gets bigger. What it didn’t do was change tendon stiffness or material properties, and certainty across the tendon outcomes was rated very low.

Bigger isn’t the same as stronger

A thicker tendon sounds like a stronger one, but the trials don’t back that yet. Stiffness — how well a tendon transmits force without deforming — is arguably what matters most for performance and injury resistance, and collagen hasn’t moved it. So ‘it grows your tendons’ holds up; ‘it bulletproofs them’ doesn’t, at least not on current evidence.

Where the case is strongest: pain

The joint-pain side is the most convincing everyday use. In a 24-week trial of 147 athletes, 10 g a day cut activity-related joint pain more than placebo. It won’t rebuild an arthritic knee, but for nagging, load-related aches it’s a low-risk experiment. Practical version: 15 g of collagen or gelatin plus about 50 mg of vitamin C, 30 to 60 minutes before you load the tissue. It’s an amplifier for training, not a replacement — no load, no benefit.
