Does emphasizing the lowering (eccentric) part of a lift build more muscle?
Not by much, and not reliably. Slower or overloaded eccentrics trend toward slightly more growth than standard reps across the research, but the edge never clears statistical significance, and it comes with real recovery and equipment costs.
Every lift has two halves: lifting the weight (concentric) and lowering it (eccentric). Muscle can resist something like 20-40% more force eccentrically than it can produce concentrically, so the same weight feels lighter on the way down — which is exactly why slowing the descent, adding extra load only on the eccentric (“accentuated eccentric loading”), or training on flywheel and isokinetic devices piles more tension onto the muscle than a standard rep does. More tension, more microscopic damage, more signaling for repair — in theory, more growth.
The head-to-head trials don’t back that up cleanly. The most rigorous recent meta-analysis (26 RCTs, 682 lifters) found eccentric-only training produced no statistically significant extra hypertrophy over concentric-only training, and the authors rated their own evidence base “very low” certainty. A 2025 review that isolated eccentric-emphasized tempo specifically — comparing roughly 1-2 second lowering phases to 3-6 second ones — called the hypertrophy estimates “uncertain” and centered near zero, though slower eccentrics did give trained lifters a modest edge in raw strength. The older, frequently cited 2009 review behind the popular “eccentric builds more mass” claim leaned that way partly because the eccentric groups it summarized trained with heavier absolute loads, not because lengthening contractions have some unique growth switch.
Damage isn’t the mechanism you think it is
The soreness after a hard eccentric session feels like proof it worked, but muscle damage and muscle growth are only loosely linked — plenty of growth from ordinary training happens without much damage at all. What eccentric emphasis reliably delivers is more fatigue and 48 to 72-plus hours of reduced force output, which can cost you volume on your next session.
What it costs to chase it
Real eccentric overload needs a partner strong enough to help rack a supra-maximal weight, or dedicated equipment — flywheels, weight-release machines, isokinetic dynamometers — that most gyms don’t have. For nearly everyone, just controlling a normal-load rep for 2-3 seconds on the way down captures almost all the available benefit. Save true eccentric-overload work for advanced lifters chasing a specific strength or tendon-rehab goal, with a spotter or the right machine on hand.
