Does greasing the groove build strength, or just skill?
Mostly skill. Frequent, submaximal practice grooves a specific movement into your nervous system fast, but it doesn't supply the training volume or overload that builds bigger muscles or a higher one-rep max.
“Greasing the groove” (GTG) means picking one movement — a pull-up, a pistol squat, a handstand — and doing easy, sub-maximal sets many times a day, always stopping well short of failure. Pavel Tsatsouline popularized it as a way to practice strength the way you’d practice a golf swing: often, and never so hard that form breaks down. The pitch is that daily low-fatigue reps groove a pattern into your nervous system faster than a couple of hard weekly sessions.
That part actually holds up. Strength research has long separated neural adaptation — learning to recruit and coordinate muscle for one specific task — from hypertrophy, the muscle actually growing, and the earliest gains on any new exercise are dominated by the former. A landmark 1986 study found that much of the “strength” people gained on a freshly practiced lift was really coordination and stabilization skill specific to that test, not a true rise in the trained muscle’s own force capacity. Brain-stimulation research since has shown that skill practice and heavy strength training produce different changes in the motor cortex and spinal pathways — evidence that getting good at a movement and getting stronger are related but not identical adaptations.
Where it earns its keep
For learning or maintaining a specific skill — a strict pull-up, a pistol squat, a handstand — frequent clean reps beat grinding to failure twice a week, where fatigue wrecks technique on exactly the reps meant to teach it. That’s also just how skill practice normally works in any sport: often, sub-maximal, and rarely to breakdown.
Where it stalls
Muscle size and peak strength track total hard training volume, not frequency by itself. Meta-analyses show that frequency’s apparent edge on strength disappears once weekly volume is equated, and hypertrophy scales with weekly sets taken reasonably close to failure, with a ceiling around ten-plus sets per muscle per week. Sub-maximal singles and doubles sprinkled through the day rack up plenty of practice but very little of that volume, so the returns dry up within weeks rather than months.
Treat GTG as a tool for learning or grooving a movement pattern, not a replacement for programmed, near-failure volume when the goal is a bigger lift or bigger muscle. The two pair well: groove the skill daily, load it hard on your actual training days.
