Do lifting belts and wrist straps actually help, or are they a crutch?
Both do something real: a belt raises intra-abdominal pressure to stiffen your trunk, and straps take grip out of the equation on pulling lifts. Neither one adds strength — they just shift which body part gives out first.
The “crutch” argument treats both like training wheels — something a truly strong lifter wouldn’t need. That’s a fair instinct, but it lumps two different, well-studied mechanisms into one vague judgment about effort.
A belt doesn’t hold your spine up by itself. It gives your abs something to brace against. Push your midsection out into the belt and intra-abdominal pressure rises — the original research on this, from 1989, found pressure peaked higher and rose earlier in the lift once a belt was on. That pressure stiffens your trunk into something closer to a rigid cylinder, which is what bracing actually means mechanically. A 2006 biomechanics study found this cut spinal compression forces by roughly 10% during heavy lifts — but only when the lifter also took a full breath before pulling. Skip the breath and most of the benefit disappears, because part of what looked like a pressure effect was really just the abdominal muscles working harder regardless of the belt. The belt amplifies a bracing skill; it doesn’t substitute for one.
Straps solve a completely different problem. On deadlifts and other heavy pulls, grip typically fails before the hips, back, or lats do, so the bar stops moving for reasons that have nothing to do with the muscles the lift is supposed to train. Trials on strapped deadlifts consistently find the same pattern: bar velocity holds up, grip fatigue is delayed, and perceived effort per rep drops, because load shifts from fingers to wrists. Testing belt, straps, and both together found the combination cut completion time and effort ratings more than either tool alone.
So which one is the crutch?
Neither, by the evidence — but both are situational. A belt is doing real work on a near-maximal squat or deadlift where trunk stiffness is the actual constraint. Straps are doing real work once your grip gives out before your back does. The mistake isn’t using either one; it’s reaching for them on sets where nothing was close to failing yet, which just delays building the capacity they’re standing in for.
