Do nitric oxide booster pre-workouts actually increase blood flow and pumps?
Mostly no, if the active ingredient is arginine — it's poorly absorbed and doesn't reliably raise nitric oxide or performance in controlled trials, despite giving the whole category its name. Citrulline and dietary nitrate are the ingredients that actually move nitric oxide, and that's a different, better-supported story told elsewhere.
Nitric oxide really does relax blood vessels and increase blood flow — that part of the pitch is real physiology, not an invention of the supplement aisle. The gap is between that mechanism and what a bottle labeled a nitric oxide booster has historically contained. For most of the category’s history, and still on a lot of labels today, that means L-arginine, the amino acid nitric oxide synthase uses to build NO. The trouble is that swallowed arginine barely gets there.
Most oral arginine never reaches circulation intact: gut and liver arginase break down a large share of it before it can do anything useful. A controlled trial giving healthy men 6 grams of arginine found no rise in blood nitric-oxide markers at any point over two hours, versus placebo. This is the so-called arginine paradox — the enzyme that makes NO is already close to saturated with the arginine normally circulating in blood, so pouring in more from a scoop accomplishes little. A 2023 review focused specifically on strength athletes reached the same verdict and stopped short of recommending arginine at all.
Citrulline sidesteps the bottleneck by skipping the liver on the way in and converting to arginine in the kidneys instead, which is why it reliably raises plasma arginine and NO markers more than arginine itself does. Dietary nitrate, from beetroot, works through a separate pathway entirely and has the deepest performance record of the three. Both are real and both get their own entries here — neither is what most nitric-oxide-branded products were built to sell.
The rest of the blend
Beyond arginine, a lot of pump-focused formulas lean on agmatine, arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG), and norvaline: ingredients with a plausible-sounding mechanism (blocking the enzyme that breaks down arginine) but little to no controlled human evidence behind the performance claims on the label. One trial gave lifters a single 3-gram dose of AAKG before training and found no improvement in strength or total training volume, trained or untrained.
The takeaway
A pump is not a stand-in for performance — a fuller-looking muscle from vasodilation isn’t the same as one contracting harder or lasting longer. If you want the nitric-oxide pathway to do something measurable, spend on citrulline or nitrate at the doses actually studied; arginine and the rest of the booster-aisle ingredient list are mostly along for the marketing ride.
