Does red light therapy help recovery?
Localized red and near-infrared devices show modest, dose-dependent benefits for soreness and strength recovery, but the evidence is low-to-moderate certainty. Whole-body at-home panels have not been shown to do the same thing.
The mechanism is at least plausible. Red and near-infrared light in roughly the 640-950 nm range is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, which is thought to nudge ATP production and blunt local oxidative stress in the tissue the light actually reaches. And unlike a lot of recovery gadgets, this one has been trialed properly: meta-analyses of handheld laser and LED clusters applied over a working muscle find more reps, longer time to exhaustion, faster strength recovery, and lower creatine kinase.
The problem is certainty, not direction. The largest pooled analysis covered 39 randomized trials and 861 people and still rated its own evidence quality as very low to moderate. A 2025 meta-analysis on delayed-onset soreness found moderate pain reductions at 72 and 96 hours, but pooled only four trials, with heterogeneity above 75% on the strength outcomes. Studies are small, protocols vary wildly, and a large share of the field traces back to a handful of research groups.
The dose is the whole argument
The protocols that worked were specific: roughly 20-60 joules for a small muscle group, 60-300 for a large one, delivered by a cluster probe held against the skin at a few points, usually 5 minutes to 6 hours before training. Contact matters, because light attenuates fast through air and skin. Photobiomodulation also has a biphasic dose response, meaning too little does nothing and too much can do worse than nothing. Change the wavelength, distance, or energy and you are no longer running the studied protocol.
Which brings us to the panel
A wall panel lighting a whole standing body from a foot away spreads a much smaller local dose across far more tissue. The only systematic review of whole-body photobiomodulation, five studies and 105 participants, found no benefit at all for fatigue markers or performance. Two studies did show better sleep and higher melatonin, which is genuinely interesting but a different claim.
If you want to test it, aim a contact device at one muscle group before you train it. Standing in front of a panel afterward is the version with the least support.
