Can your wearable really measure your sleep?
Your wearable is reasonably good at telling sleep from wake and roughly how long you slept, but weak at splitting that into light, deep, and REM stages. The stage breakdown is a guess, not a measurement.
Your wrist tracker is doing something real: it watches movement and heart rate and makes an educated guess. The honest question is how that guess holds up against polysomnography — the clinical setup that reads your actual brainwaves, eye movements, and muscle tone. On one job, trackers do well. In a seven-device head-to-head against the lab, every device correctly flagged sleep more than 93% of the time, so the headline “you slept about seven hours” usually lands in the right neighborhood.
The trouble hides inside that strength. Being great at spotting sleep means these devices are bad at spotting its opposite: quiet wakefulness. Their specificity — the rate of correctly catching minutes you were actually awake — runs from roughly 0.18 to 0.54 across studies. So they flatter you, scoring still-but-awake time as sleep. Heart-rate models have narrowed the gap, but they still lean optimistic.
The stages are mostly inference
That four-slice chart of light, deep, and REM is where marketing outruns the hardware. Sleep stages are defined by brainwaves, and your watch has no electrodes on your scalp — it infers stages from motion and pulse. It shows. Validation work finds devices miss 30 to 50% of deep sleep and REM, and even recent flagship watches match the lab on only about two-thirds of REM time, with overall agreement rated fair to moderate at best. Two nights of identical real sleep can produce very different-looking pie charts.
The orthosomnia trap
Sleep physicians named the fallout: orthosomnia, a perfectionist fixation on ideal sleep scores that ends up harming sleep. In the first reported cases, patients were convinced something was wrong because a tracker called their deep sleep low, then lay awake chasing a better number the next night. The data created the disorder.
Watch the direction, not the nightly grade. Total sleep and the week-to-week trend are worth a glance; treat the stage breakdown as a rough sketch. If your tracker and your body disagree, believe your body — and if the score has you anxious at lights-out, that is your cue to stop checking.
