Does soy lower testosterone or "feminize" men?
No — not at the amounts people actually eat. Pooled data from 40+ clinical studies show no effect on testosterone or free testosterone in men at any dose, and no change in estrogen at dietary intakes; only very high supplement doses nudge estradiol slightly. The myth traces back to rodent work and a couple of extreme case reports.
Soy contains isoflavones — mainly genistein and daidzein — structurally similar enough to estradiol to bind estrogen receptors. That’s the entire basis of the worry, and in a petri dish or a rat fed isolated isoflavones, the binding does measurable things. Rats also absorb and metabolize isoflavones differently than humans, which is why those doses don’t translate.
Then there are the case reports everyone cites. A 60-year-old man drinking three quarts of soy milk a day — about 360 mg of isoflavones — developed gynecomastia and elevated estrogen. A young man on a soy-heavy diet showed up with low testosterone and erectile dysfunction. Both reversed on stopping. Both were eating roughly ten times what a high-soy Japanese diet delivers (25-50 mg/day).
In humans eating human amounts, the trials are boring. A 2021 meta-analysis pooled 41 clinical studies — testosterone measured in 1,753 men, estradiol in 1,000 — and found nothing: no change in total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, or estrone, at any dose or duration tested. A 2022 technical review of 417 reports reached the same conclusion on hormones, sperm, and semen.
Where the picture gets fuzzier
A 2025 dose-response meta-analysis did find small nonlinear rises in estradiol (~6.5 pg/mL at 72 mg isoflavones/day) and SHBG (~9 nmol/L at 120 mg/day) — supplement territory, built on few studies, with testosterone still unmoved. One observational study of men at an infertility clinic linked the highest soy intake to 41 million/mL lower sperm concentration; controlled feeding trials haven’t reproduced it. Also worth knowing: much of the reassuring literature carries Mark Messina, who directs a soy-industry institute, as an author. The independent 2025 analysis lands in the same place on testosterone regardless.
As a protein source
Soy is a complete protein with all nine essential amino acids, just lower in leucine than whey. A meta-analysis of nine training studies found no difference between soy and whey or animal protein for gains in strength or lean mass.
Eat it if you like it. If soy is your main protein source, run servings slightly larger to cover the leucine gap — that’s the only adjustment the evidence actually supports.
