Do You Need to Squat to Parallel or Below?

The short answer

Not universally. Squat as deep as you can control with solid form — extra depth builds a bit more muscle and carries over better to real strength, but a lifter whose hips or ankles cap out above parallel isn't missing anything by stopping there.

Parallel isn’t a rulebook, it’s a proxy for something more useful: are you training through a genuinely long range of motion? That’s the variable researchers actually manipulate, and how much it matters depends heavily on which muscle and which outcome you’re asking about.

The landmark trial here is Bloomquist and colleagues, who ran lifters through 12 weeks of squats stopped at either 60° or 120° of knee flexion; the deep group packed on more thigh muscle and gained more strength. Kubo and colleagues later sharpened the picture: over 10 weeks, full and half squats built the quads about equally, but the full-squat group added noticeably more adductor and glute muscle. A 2023 systematic review of range-of-motion trials — squats included — backs this up: full range of motion usually matches or beats partial for hypertrophy, but the edge is muscle-specific, and for the quads it mostly evaporates once partial reps still reach roughly 90 degrees.

Depth also buys more than size. In Kubo’s trial, half-squat training raised full-squat max by about a third as much as full-squat training did (11% vs. 32%), even though both groups improved half-squat strength equally — strength transfers best to the range you actually trained. A 2025 trial in youth tennis players found the same split: full squats beat half squats for bar speed and body composition even though muscle growth came out even.

Your knees are probably not the problem

“Deep squats wreck your knees” doesn’t hold up well against the data. A 2024 scoping review pooling 15 studies on deep squatting and knee-joint structures found the large majority showed no added harm to healthy knees, alongside better strength and jump-performance carryover than shallow squatting. Under a progressive load and reasonable technique, full knee flexion is not the injury risk gym folklore makes it out to be.

When shallow is the honest call

Hips aren’t interchangeable parts. Socket depth, femoral neck angle, and ankle mobility vary enough that some lifters hit a genuine bony or soft-tissue stop well above parallel. Pushing past it doesn’t buy extra muscle — it trades tension in the target muscle for a rounded lower back or knees caving in, and no trial credits those compensations with anything. If that’s your body, squatting to your real end range, or training partial reps on purpose, isn’t a lesser lift. Chase the deepest position you can control, not a line on the floor.
