Does yoga actually improve athletic performance or recovery?

The short answer

Yoga reliably improves flexibility, balance, and how fast your nervous system calms down after training, but it hasn't been shown to directly boost strength, speed, or power the way real training does.

Yoga’s reputation with athletes rests on two different claims that tend to get lumped together: that it makes you perform better, and that it helps you recover and stay healthy. The evidence treats those two very differently.

On flexibility and balance, the data actually holds up. Small randomized trials in college athletes show real gains - measured in centimeters of reach and seconds of single-leg stance - after 8 to 16 weeks of regular practice. That’s not surprising; holding static end-range positions is exactly what yoga asks joints and muscles to do, so the transfer to a flexibility test is close to direct. The autonomic story checks out too: a 2025 crossover trial comparing yoga to static stretching after a hard interval session found yoga produced quicker parasympathetic reactivation - lower respiratory rate and better heart-rate-variability recovery in the first 15 minutes - even though heart rate and blood pressure came back down about the same either way.

The stress side is similarly real but easy to overstate. A 2023 meta-analysis pooling 15 trials in athletes found yoga and mindfulness work reliably lowered perceived stress and raised in-competition “flow” scores, but the pooled effect on anxiety specifically fell short of significance, and the studies disagreed with each other enough that the authors rated the underlying evidence only low to moderate.

Where it gets oversold

This is where performance claims fall apart on inspection. A systematic review built specifically to test whether yoga improves competitive performance found just 6 studies worth including out of 37 candidates, and rated the average trial “poor quality” - about 47% on their scoring tool. Athletes in those trials did report better subjective performance and less competition anxiety, but the authors’ own verdict was “encouraging but limited,” not proof. A separate review makes a plausible mechanistic case that yoga’s parasympathetic effect could support tissue healing and lower injury risk, but that argument leans on physiology and observation, not trials that actually counted injuries before and after.

The practical takeaway

Use yoga for what it demonstrably does - mobility work and a genuinely effective cool-down - and don’t expect it to replace strength or speed training, or to function as injury insurance on its own.
