Is weightlifting safe and effective for kids and teens?

The short answer

Yes, when it's supervised and age-appropriate. The classic growth-plate injury scare doesn't hold up in the data, and coached resistance training builds real strength and motor skill without adding injury risk.

The scare that barbells fuse growth plates early and stunt height traces back to old case reports: kids getting hurt on adult-loaded equipment with zero coaching, plus a scattering of accidents in competitive powerlifting. That’s not the same activity as a coached resistance-training program, and the injury numbers reflect the split. Reviews of supervised youth resistance training, weightlifting, and powerlifting report injury rates as low as 0.00017–0.29 per 100 training hours. Compare that to roughly 4.36 injuries per 1000 exposures in youth tackle football, and the “dangerous” activity looks like one of the safer things a kid does after school. Most injuries that do happen are mundane — a dropped plate, a pinched finger — not fractured growth plates, and researchers estimate a majority are preventable lapses in supervision or equipment fit rather than a consequence of the loading itself.

That’s also the official position, not a fringe take. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2020 clinical report and the international consensus statement on youth resistance training (endorsed by pediatric, sports-medicine, and strength-and-conditioning bodies) both conclude that resistance training, including external load, is appropriate even before puberty. The actual restriction they impose isn’t “no weights” — it’s no single-rep max attempts and no competitive powerlifting or bodybuilding until later in adolescent development.

The benefits are real, not just “not harmful”

A meta-analysis pooling controlled trials in children and adolescents found meaningful strength gains at every maturity stage. Prepubertal gains come almost entirely from improved motor-unit recruitment rather than muscle growth, since hypertrophy potential is limited before puberty kicks in. In youth athletes specifically, dose-response data shows moderate-to-large improvements in strength and vertical jump, with the benefit scaling up as training frequency and intensity increase.

What appropriate progression looks like

Master bodyweight and light-load technique before adding weight, train two to three nonconsecutive days a week, start with one to two sets of 8-15 reps and progress gradually, and keep a qualified coach in the room throughout. That’s the actual formula — not “wait until 18,” just “do it right.”
